The total number of M 98 rifles made at Erfurt is, it appears, unknown but is certainly a six-digit number. The above information is taken from 'M98 Rifle & Carbine' by Dr. That book is the third of three books on German rifles and, although expensive, contains a wealth of information.

Mauser 8mm Gew 98 - Questions and advice
I inherited an 8mm Mauser recently, and was hoping to get a little insight as to what I have on my hands.
Link to album with various pics. http://imgur.com/a/Ip0O4
I tried to include as many shots as possible, but I can add more if needed.
A few questions:
Any noticeable repairs/modifications? I notice that not all parts have matching numbers, but for the most part the number “405” is prevalent on most parts.
Do the modifications/non-matching parts seen in the photos change the value of the gun?
The stock seem to be in pretty good shape for a 1916 firearm. Any way to tell if it is original? I’ve noticed on other Gew 98 posts where people include photos of German stamps on the stock, but I am not able to find any on my gun.
The Philips head screw located on the front band seems out of place. What purpose does it serve, and any reason to keep it on the gun if it is not original?
The front sights. Are they original?
I have not personally shot this rifle yet, but from what I hear it is in great working order. I do not plan to make any moderations or sporterizing the rifle. Any suggestions to keep this rifle as authentic as possible without decreasing the value would be appreciated. I would also be interested to know the value of this gun as is.
Much appreciated!
P.S. - This is my first post so play nice :)
